Leisure and Health

Leisure and health comprises the activities that we participate in to get fit, relax, have fun and be social.

Within the Aged Care and Disability sectors leisure and health activities contribute significantly to the positive health and well-being of those with traditional ‘barriers to participation’.

According to the World Health Organisation, the most common barriers to participation include;

  • The attitudes of people towards disability
  • Communication barriers such as the use of small instead of large print, lack of sign language support, lack of braille options, videos without captioning and the use of overly technical language.
  • Physical barriers such as steps and curbs that can prevent access to buildings
  • Policies that deny individuals with disabilities the opportunity to  benefit from federally funded programs and services
  • Inconvenient scheduling and a lack of accessible facilities and equipment
  • Transportation barriers due to a lack of or limited adequate transportation
  • Lack of understanding and awareness of how to include people with a disability in leisure and health activities

As an individual working in this sector your primary role will be to design, organise and deliver leisure and health activities to both people WITH barriers to participation and those without, in an effort to improve their overall health and wellbeing.

And with job numbers expected to increase significantly over the coming years and the role of Diversional Therapist prioritised by the state of Victoria as one of the careers that will yield the most value to the Victorian economy and community1, now is a great time to commence a career in leisure and health.
