By studying this qualification you’ll learn to provide services to people in relation to alcohol and other drugs issues. You’ll develop the knowledge and skills required to provide counselling, referral and promotion services in this area.

Subjects include Working in an alcohol and other drugs context, co-existing mental health and alcohol and other drugs issues, providing interventions for people with alcohol and other drugs issues, strategies for alcohol and other drugs relapse prevention and management, individual alcohol and other drugs treatment plans, working with carers and/or families in complex situations and more.

PRE-REQUISITES

There is no re-requisite for this qualification, , however you will be required to complete an LLN test prior to enrolment for entry into this qualification, which will determine your suitability for this course. This qualification will provide you with the skills and knowledge required to work in roles that provide services to clients with alcohol and other drugs issues. It will enable you to provide counselling, referral and promotion services and will work under broad supervision and guidance. You will be provided with specialist knowledge, skills and competencies in regard to laws affecting clients, the range of services available to them and health issues related to alcohol and drugs use and misuse. If you are not working or volunteering directly in an alcohol and/or drugs service or setting you will need to undertake a 120 hour practical placement throughout the enrolment period of this course This practical placement can be completed incrementally throughout the duration of the course or in blocks. Suitablepractical placements include: AOD case manager or counsellor, Clinical Coordinator, Residential Support, Community Recovery or Outreach Worker, Centrelink, Public Housing, AA or other Volunteer Support Groups.
